The Movement of Loving Kindness

with Tracy Sheridan

September 11-13

“Loving Kindness [Metta] is the life blood of meditative practice, the foundation for all good spiritual qualities.”

We all have the potential to live our lives, even in times of great stress and uncertainty, with a heart filled with radiant loving-kindness for ourselves and others. Loving kindness is one of the four Brahma Viharas (Pali) -- divine abidings or emotions of the heart -- that is not dependent on ideal circumstances; rather, we can learn to recognize, awaken, and develop it so it becomes the natural dwelling place of the heart.

In this weekend retreat you are invited to learn and investigate the practice of loving kindness through the four postures of meditation (sitting, walking, standing and lying), nourishing yoga and breath work, and exploration of the Dharma Centre’s forest property. Silence, although not mandatory, will be encouraged as a means of deepening your own exploration and practice.

As an inner expression of the heart, depth loving kindness (metta in Pali) is much deeper and more stable than merely thinking nice thoughts about loving kindness. By learning and building confidence in these simple practices a new way of living can develop, leading to greater awareness, calm and openheartedness.

What is Dana? Teachers give the teachings of awakening (Dharma) freely so that anyone, no matter their financial means can attend classes. Each time one receives teachings, it is an opportunity to consciously practice generosity. Giving money and other means of support expresses gratitude and support to the teacher and helps to ensure that these teachings continue. Each person receiving Dharma teachings determines the kind and amount of Dāna according to one’s heart and one’s financial means. When deciding how much to offer, one should think about what these teachings mean to you and try to give accordingly. It is recommended that students make an offering of dāna at the beginning of a class or retreat to establish the intention to make the most of this opportunity for one’s own progression and for the benefit of all others.
