Unfolding through Art

ONLINE Retreat

with Sonam Senge

Friday, August 20 - Wednesday, August 25

This course will be an examination of Namgyal Rinpoche's teaching on art as a Path to liberation. The principle text will be Unfolding Through Art by Namgyal Rinpoche. In this course Sonam Senge will be giving an experiential description of the Path as it has unfolded for him. Throughout the years of his study with Rinpoche, art always played a major role in how Rinpoche and Senge related. Sonam Senge will take excerpts from the text and explore them from a practitioner's point of view, stimulating others to question and engage themselves in their own expression of the creativity necessary for spiritual unfoldment.

Daily classes will be from 10 - 11:30 am EST.

Karma Sonam Senge is a teacher of awakening in the tradition of his principal teacher the Venerable Namgyal Rinpoche. Senge, a native of New York State, was recognised as a gifted painter when still in his teens, and was invited to attend the prestigious Art Students League in New York City. Senge later travelled to Toronto in 1967 where he met and began studying with Namgyal Rinpoche (then Bikkhu Ananda Bodhi). Senge received ordination in the Karma Kargyu tradition from His Holiness the 16th Karmapa. He has also been ordained in the way of the elders (Theravaden tradition) by Sayadaw U Thila Wanta of Burma.

In 1975 Senge co-founded the Open Path Dharma Centre in Boise Idaho. In the early 1980’s His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche (of the Sakya tradition) asked Senge to begin giving Wonkurs (Tibetan meditation empowerments). From 1983-86, Senge led a three-year Ngondro Foundation work retreat in Costa Rica, after which he became the senior instructor in Buddhist Studies at the Kinmount Academy and Seminary founded by Namgyal Rinpoche. During this time Lama Senge received all of the Anuttara Yoga crown level empowerments while under the spiritual guidance of the late Venerable Namgyal Rinpoche. He was responsible for doing the mandalas and assisting Rinpoche with these Initiations.

In 1989, Senge led a group of Dharma students on a tour of Asia, meeting many teachers including the Venerable Tara Tulku Rinpoche, His Eminence Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In the mid 1990’s, Senge’s love of sailing led him in a three year exploration with his principal student Susan Bell. For three years they taught sailing and ecology to children on their sailboat off the coast of British Columbia. From 1998 to 2000 Senge lived in Thailand and Malaysia, completing the first of a three part series of books on Buddha Dharma as practised in the West.

Senge currently lives off the coast of Vancouver Island, Canada, where he works with students who are committed to in depth transformation. Senge is a tantric adept, a student of the Kaballah, a teacher of Western mysteries, and a visionary Dharma teacher.

Dana: Teachers give the teachings of awakening (Dharma) freely so that anyone, no matter their financial means can attend classes. Each time one receives teachings, it is an opportunity to consciously practice generosity. Giving money and other means of support expresses gratitude and support to the teacher and helps to ensure that these teachings continue. Each person receiving Dharma teachings determines the kind and amount of Dāna according to one’s heart and one’s financial means. When deciding how much to offer, one should think about what these teachings mean to you and try to give accordingly. It is recommended that students make an offering of dāna at the beginning of a class or retreat to establish the intention to make the most of this opportunity for one’s own progression and for the benefit of all others.

Sonam Senge is sharing his experience within the traditional understanding of dana/donation which can be offered through e-transfer to the following email address: 2sonam.senge@gmail.com
