The Art of Giving: Buddhist Teaching on Dana Parami

Retreat with Shelane Donoghue

The Buddhist Parami, Dana, the Perfection of Generosity - is perfecting the ability to give, to share; to show interest; to exchange; to love; to penetrate wisdom. Without an ability to give generously, which includes receiving, one’s ability to move to transcendence is hampered.

This retreat will explore how giving/generosity, Dana (in Pali), is interwoven between the Three Cycles of Teachings. Penetrating the illusion of the self through generosity, to compassion, to Bodhicitta, to Mandala Offering and Guru Yoga, Dana, the ability to generously give and receive, is essential. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, come to expand your capacity to give wholeheartedly and effortlessly. Strengthen & build an ever-expanding merit field through Dana Parami.

All students will have the opportunity to hear meditative practices on Dana, from all three Cycles of Teachings. Your individual practices, during this retreat time will be dependent on your interest, background and experience.

Come to Give; to Receive; to Transcend!

What is Dana? Teachers give the teachings of awakening (Dharma) freely so that anyone, no matter their financial means can attend classes. Each time one receives teachings, it is an opportunity to consciously practice generosity. Giving money and other means of support expresses gratitude and support to the teacher and helps to ensure that these teachings continue. Each person receiving Dharma teachings determines the kind and amount of Dāna according to one’s heart and one’s financial means. When deciding how much to offer, one should think about what these teachings mean to you and try to give accordingly. It is recommended that students make an offering of dāna at the beginning of a class or retreat to establish the intention to make the most of this opportunity for one’s own progression and for the benefit of all others.
